The role of plants in the prevention of soil-slip: the G-SLIP model and its application on territorial scale through G-XSLIP platform

Abstract This paper discusses the role of plants in prevention shallow landslides induced by rain (soil slips); these phenomena, related to “hydrogeological instability,” are among most feared because their evolutionary processes can cause huge damages and losses human lives when interacting with anthropized areas infrastructures. The first highlights how interact soil; then introduces G-SLIP (Green – Shallow Landslides Instability Prediction) model, i.e., simplified physically-based SLIP modified predict soil slips at punctual large scale taking into account vegetation effects. model is thus applied a case study Parma Apennines (Northern Italy) using G-XSLIP platform. In this area, during intense events between 4th 5th April 2013, numerous occurred, provoking structures infrastructures, consequent economic losses. stability analyses carried out demonstrate that presence area led significant reduction triggering landslides. Finally, an attempt slip mitigation through naturalistic techniques (planting specific vegetation) presented.
